About The Big Adventure

A fun once in a lifetime adventure to change the course of your life

I am challenging you to join me – to simply let go, and step into the abyss with me, to discover something wonderful about yourself on the other side.

There is something very powerful about the unknown.   There is something very profound to be learnt from simply letting go of the known and walking into the abyss.

To many, it is too scary to contemplate; but to those who embrace it, it is a place of invaluable learning, exhilaration and transformation. How we respond to the unknown can dominate our lives.  The avoidance of fear is just one of the ways we try to keep to our comfort zone and maintain the status quo – and yet, the world continues to change around us. We can still feel lost and disorientated, just from standing still.

This is why I am running another event. A fun once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list experience, for a small band of adventurers who will not know anything about it until they arrive.

To meet rapidly-changing future, we all need to develop fearlessness, skills, ideas, community and, above all, a love for the adventure of life.

This secret one-of-a-kind adventure has been curated in order to deliver all that.

You’ll never know what the unknown holds, unless you take a step into it.

I was one of the 12! I survived the adventure. I felt the fear. I connected openly, honestly and authentically with each of the other 11 – remarkable in only 4 days! And I went on a roller-coaster journey of self-discovery. So much so I have had to deliberately apply the brakes upon my return. I need time for my left-brain to catch up with my right-brain. I need to turn impulse into intention. I need to make sure I am being bold but not foolish. But in a while I will be in a place to make decisions I wouldn’t have made without the Adventure – thank you Marc. By then, I’ll also be ready for the next Adventure – bring it on!

As a fellow adventurer and general trouble maker I went with a healthy dose of cynicism, which was completely blown away by the incredible people I met and the experience I had. I probably faced more fears in 4 days than I had in the last 10 years. Marc constructed something quite deliberate and rather brilliant – an experience that will stay with me and help me challenge my approach for years to come. Still stunned.

I am happy to say that I too managed to not only survive the magical mystery tour, but actually thrived on it and built deeply bonded friendships with people in a shorter period of time than I have ever experienced in my life. From the build up of not knowing where I was going or whom I was meeting, through the bonding experiences with others who were also thrown well outside of our normal comfort zones, we were forced to actively confront our personal boundaries and reflect on how and why we might consider shifting them. I’ve been to Burning Man, and I’ve been on a skydiving team, but this was an adventure that gave me greater insight and allowed for deeper bonding than Burning Man, while at the same time challenging me both physically and mentally more than regularly jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Marc, I’d like to thank you from the bottom of my soul for the opportunity to be a part of this.

Thank you Marc for taking me on the board of the Adventure Boat. It was easily the most intense and open experiment in connecting deeply with 11 incredible people I’ve had to-date! By opening up, by sharing our deepest thoughts, fears, failures and successes – by being ultimately hyper vulnerable – I became infinitely stronger. I challenge everyone to open up and share because that’s the only way to discover the real you and find your path in life. It’s through a myriad of serendipitous sparks, human connections, stepping far outside our comfort and safety zones that we rediscover our path and build a world of unrestricted possibilities. I will stronger than ever in facing a completely uncertain world – it’s makes me tickle with excitement at the adventures ahead! If anything I’ve acquired 10 new brothers and 1 sister and have already increased my Dunbar number by ±10%!

As someone who runs digital detoxing weekends, I know that getting people to switch off helps them to switch on. Undistracted by the beep, buzz and ring of our phones and the demands of everyday life, we all experienced a feeling of gaining time and space to think. The environment and experiences Marc curated also allowed for what Tony Hsieh calls a Return On Collisions as a group of people who didn’t know each other bounced ideas, thoughts and feelings off each other. I certainly felt richer for the experience and have taken a lot of the out takes forward into my daily life. One of the biggest of these is the realisation that to play it safe is a much more dangerous place than to play it adventurously.

It was a privilege to be part of the Great Adventure. What struck me in particular was the instantaneous bond of trust and cameraderie that sprang into existence amongst such a diverse group of strangers. No doubt the cloak of secrecy deliberately (and I daresay not a little mischievously) engineered by Marc had a great deal to do with this. We pushed a few physical boundaries by day, and in my case at least some fairly well entrenched mental boundaries by night. Thanks to Marc for bringing everybody together in such an original way, and thanks to my fellow travellers for their openness and friendship. What an experience, and what interesting projects lie ahead.

I was also on Marc’s mystery adventure. It was an amazing experience for a number of reasons. Firstly, the location was a special mix of beauty and opportunities for exploration. Secondly were the range of activities that lead to a great deal of comfort-zone expansion, open communication, and reflective introspection. The biggest portion of the experience for me however, was the self-selection of some genuinely fascinating individuals, who all chose to leap into the unknown. Making friendships with such brave spirits was truly special. I’m incredibly grateful to Marc for his great generosity, and for deciding to do this, just to see what ‘return on adventure’ can really bring…

I too was one of the lucky adventurers who headed into the unknown and put my total faith in Marc and his plans. It turned out to be a very wise decision indeed. Marc brought together a fantastic group of people who were open to ideas and shared a passion to push themselves and help each other. The activities that were thrown at us gave us further opportunities to embrace uncertainty and challenge ourselves. On a personal note I have always dealt with fears when obstacles were placed directly in front of me but I have not always sort out fear and challenged myself to fulfil my full potential. This trip reminded me that if you embrace your fears focusing on a positive outcome then you can overcome anything!!!! This realisation has energised my passion and I am now embracing life more than ever…..Thank you Marc in particular and the other adventurers for your contributions to my experience.

Your Host Marc

Husband. Father. Life Adventurer. Human Catalyst. Experience Curator.

First and foremost, I am husband to Valerie, father to Charlie and Bertie and part-owned by a dog called Henry. I (sometimes) live in the beautiful Channel Island of Guernsey – soon to be the best place to live on earth. These days, I am a full time social catalyst, spending much of my time focused on making the world a better place, one person at a time. I would struggle to look my sons in the eye if I, at least, didn’t have a go.

In a past life, I was an unhappy and unhealthy internet entrepreneur in the alternative health sector (irony not lost). We initially lost a lot of money, but in the end found a way to make a good amount. You learn an awful lot about yourself through a decade-long experience like that.

Since then, I have been working with many people, helping them build sustainable, life-enhancing lives that make a difference to their family, friends, community and the world.

My primary mission and purpose is to bring joy and light to the world. I do this by helping others take significant and meaningful shifts in their lives.

You could look at my LinkedIn profile here, which will take you some way to knowing what I am all about. To really experience who I am, come and learn more about me by spending time with me. Spend time in my head by reading my blog, or have a cup of coffee with me (Guernsey or Skype).

Above all take a leap of faith and come and join me on this life changing adventure.

FAQs

Before you come

Yes. Absolutely. It doesn’t matter who you are or what your story is there is a role to play for you on this adventure. If you are reading this far then it is probably right for you to take a leap of faith and explore the unknown.

  • 6 days off the grid
  • A valid passport and ability to travel through the US
  • A strong sense of fun and adventure
  • A willingness to share your greatest challenges in life and work
  • A desire to reconnect to the real you
  • A desire to raise your own bar and make a bigger impact on the world
  • A desire to make a small number of new, lifelong connections
  • The ability to swim

You will need to complete a questionnaire before the event. You may also be required to read a book to get some further background content. This is a really insightful and personally revealing part of the process that helps you connect with your fellow adventurers far faster when you arrive. The more you put into this process the more you get out of the event.

All dietary requirements and specific needs will be catered for where possible. Just let us know.

Rationale

We deliberately try to restrict as much information as possible. You will be told what to bring and what the weather will be like 2 days before you leave. You will be given your travel documents and information about your fellow adventurers the day before you leave.

There are several reasons.

Do you remember those unexpected adventures that you have had in your life? Do you remember that those unexpected things often have turned out to be the best moments of your life? Well, that is what we try to recreate. A planned unexpected adventure is all about creating one of those experiences to be remembered forever.

Do you remember when the power went out in New York City and everyone went out in the streets and started talking to each other? Uncertainty is the fastest way to create openness and human connection. Mad adventures are designed to bring groups together very quickly and deeply.

The future will be more uncertain and unexpected than ever. Learning to enjoy yourself without being in control of life is a key skill that we all need to develop. My adventures help you experience that in a safe, fun and structured way. The aim is for you to take what you learn from that experience back into day to day life.

When we’re there

That would be telling. I always focus on making sure my adventures have people leave in far better condition than when they arrive. Good sleep. Good food. Good company.

We always eat as a group. Mealtime discussions are one of the most valuable parts of the trip. It is where most of the really interesting and unexpected conversations and breakthroughs happen.
Not really. There is a fair amount of unstructured time, which you could take as free time, but the onus is on us to build personal connections and reflect together as much as possible. We prefer you to disconnect yourself from work and electronics, but if you must touch base – you can. We positively encourage people to take the time to connect with family during the event.
Yes and no. It’s a bit like a magic carpet ride. There is a plan but we take away the need for most decision-making. This frees your mind and allows you to be fully present for the experience. Some of the event is pre-designed; some of it ebbs and flows with the group. We create an environment where everyone in the group can contribute. It is amazing what that can bring.
We tell you that 2 days beforehand you leave. Historically there has always been a focus on what you need to enjoy the adventure and then what you most feel comfortable in.

Money, travel & accommodation

Yes, all the food is included in the cost. You should not have to pay for anything during your time on the adventure should you not wish to.
Yes.
No. This is a not-for-profit endeavour. Neither myself nor the facilitators make any money from the event. If there are any funds left over, they will go towards sponsoring young social entrepreneurs to take part in this and future events. This event is all about you making an impact in the world. Nothing more.
Please provide details of your travel insurance cover, and we will advise if any upgrades are needed. We try to keep what will happen on the adventure a surprise.
Only if you want it!
You have your own room. A good night’s sleep is key to keeping your mind in great condition.
It is very hard to translate such a monumental experience for someone who hasn’t been part of it. This event creates big changes in life and outlook, which can be unsettling for some relationships. Moving from wealth generation to impact-making needs to be a joint decision. We provide the facility for all couples to share this big step in the journey.
To be honest, we would love to take on that challenge. We just haven’t thought through the logistics and enquired to see if it is possible and from which age. We would love you to be free to spend all day focussed on the topics and discussion, though. If you do have a genuine interest in bringing your children, please get in touch and we will see what can be done.

After the adventure finishes…

That is up to you. You will have a group of friends to hold you to account and share the journey – as well as a completely new mindset for taking on new challenges in the world. Re-entry into the world may be a bit unsettling, since many of your previously held realities will be challenged to the core. Support is on hand from the facilitators before, during, and after the event to help with that transition.
